Refresh Data Automatically

Hi,

I am currently using Power Bi desktop and I needed some help on to refresh my data automatically. I am currently extracting my data from a CSV file. I created a script to automatically save the CSV file every 60sec through excel using Visual Basic. Now when I go to POwer Bi Dektop and click refresh it perfectly syncs all the new data but I wanted to know if there is a way that it will just refresh without me having to manually click refresh? Ive been looking for the schedueled refresh option but it seems that only works Power Query, I also already tried Power Automate. so if anyone has found another way please help out!

Yes, there is a way to automatically refresh the data in Power BI Desktop without having to manually click the refresh button. One option is to use the Power BI Personal Gateway, which allows you to schedule automatic refreshes of your data from a variety of data sources, including CSV files.

To use the Power BI Personal Gateway for automatic refresh, follow these steps:

  1. Install the Power BI Personal Gateway on the computer where your CSV file is located. You can download the gateway from the Power BI website.

  2. In Power BI Desktop, go to the "Home" tab and click on "Transform Data" to open Power Query.

  3. In Power Query, connect to your CSV file and perform any necessary data transformations.

  4. Click on "Close & Apply" to close Power Query and return to Power BI Desktop.

  5. Go to the "File" menu and select "Options and settings" > "Options".

  6. Select "Data Load" from the left-hand menu.

  7. Under "Data Load", select "Enable load" and "Include in report refresh".

  8. Under "Data Load", select "Refresh data when opening the file".

  9. Under "Data Load", select "Refresh every" and set the frequency at which you want the data to be refreshed.

  10. Click on "OK" to save your changes.

  11. Go to the "Home" tab and click on "Publish" to publish your report to the Power BI service.

  12. In the Power BI service, go to the "Datasets" tab and select your dataset.

  13. Click on "Settings" and select "Scheduled refresh".

  14. Set up a refresh schedule for your dataset, using the same frequency as you set in Power BI Desktop.

  15. Click on "Apply" to save your changes.

Once you have set up the Power BI Personal Gateway and scheduled refresh for your dataset, your CSV data will be automatically refreshed on the schedule you have specified.
