RSL

Hi guys,

I created a Power BI report and added some roles using RSL features. Now I need to share the report with many users, but not everybody has a Power BI Pro license. I would like to know if there's a way for these users to access the report, even with a free license?

Thank you very much,
Michelle.

Yes @miikasa i have mentioned alternative ways too "If upgrading to Premium is not an option, consider the alternatives like embedding or exporting reports based on your specific needs and constraints."

  1. Microsoft 365 Licensing:

    • Check for Microsoft 365 E5 or A5 Licenses: If your organization uses Microsoft 365 E5 or A5 licenses, these come with Power BI Pro. Users with these licenses can access shared content without needing a separate Power BI Pro subscription.
    • Upgrade Licenses: Consider upgrading users to Microsoft 365 plans that include Power BI Pro if feasible.

Hope it helps you

you have to assign the roles to the user in power bi service Goto security > select Roles > assign users to that role. That will work.

else if the report is embeded in application pass role and Filter to the report from front end this way you can assign RLS to the users

Hi @miikasa - To share your Power BI reports with free users, especially when using RLS, is to move to Power BI Premium. This solution ensures compliance with Microsoft’s licensing model while providing access to all intended users.

If upgrading to Premium is not an option, consider the alternatives like embedding or exporting reports based on your specific needs and constraints.

another approach is:

  • Check for Microsoft 365 E5 or A5 Licenses: If your organization uses Microsoft 365 E5 or A5 licenses, these come with Power BI Pro. Users with these licenses can access shared content without needing a separate Power BI Pro subscription.
  • Upgrade Licenses: Consider upgrading users to Microsoft 365 plans that include Power BI Pro if feasible.

@rajendraongole1 Ok, I appreciate your help, thank you!

Hi @rajendraongole1,

Thank you very much for your answer.

If I understood correctly, your first suggestion is: everyone should move to a Power BI Pro license, right?

I'll check about your second approach.

Thank you again and best regards,

Michelle.
