Query prioritization rules

can it be possible for power bi admin to set query prioritization rules based on a variety of factors.

Power BI does not natively support setting query prioritization rules directly within the platform. Power BI primarily focuses on data visualization and reporting, and while it offers various administrative and governance features, query prioritization is not one of them.

However, query performance and resource management can be influenced indirectly through several approaches:

Optimizing Data Models: Ensuring that data models are well-optimized can help improve query performance. This includes using proper indexing, reducing data complexity, and optimizing DAX calculations.

Using Aggregations: Power BI allows the use of aggregations to improve query performance by pre-aggregating data at different levels of granularity.

DirectQuery and Import Modes: Choosing the appropriate data connectivity mode (DirectQuery vs. Import) based on the use case can impact performance. DirectQuery can be used for real-time data access, while Import mode can be used for faster query performance on pre-loaded data.

Power BI Premium: For organizations using Power BI Premium, there are additional features like workload management and resource allocation that can help manage and prioritize resources for different workloads.

Hi @powerbiexpert22

Unfortunately, Power BI does not currently support query prioritization rules in a way that allows an admin to control or assign different priorities to queries based on factors like user role, dataset size, or refresh frequency.

Power BI handles query execution automatically through the underlying engine (either VertiPaq for Import mode or DirectQuery passthrough to the source), and prioritization is influenced more by capacity-level features like:

  • Power BI Premium Capacity settings (e.g., CPU throttling, max memory per dataset)

  • Query concurrency limits

  • Refresh prioritization – available only for scheduled refreshes, and even then, it’s limited and not admin-configurable per user/query.

  • Resource usage by workspace (you can isolate heavy datasets by assigning them to dedicated capacities).

If you're using Power BI Embedded or Azure Analysis Services, there might be more flexibility with query throttling or job queues, but not directly within the Power BI Service.

For more control, some organizations use Azure Synapse / Data Factory pipelines to pre-aggregate or pre-prioritize data logic upstream — before it even reaches Power BI.

If this post helps, then please consider Accepting it as the solution to help the other members find it more quickly
