Publishing a report based sharepoint online list

PowerBI desktop keeps failing when I try to publish a simple report based on a simple list. 

The error report was sent to Microsoft via the desktop application.

So, my question is this even allowed? Have others been able to publish a report based on a sharepoint online list?
