Problem publishing a report that uses a shared dataset

I have 3 reports that share the same dataset. All reports and dataset reside in the same new experience workspace.

The problem I have is that when I make changes to these reports from PBI Desktop and republish, I get a new version of the report that also has its own dataset. The original report remains unchanged yet linked to the shared dataset.

Is this behavior expected? I haven't found anything online yet that describes what I'm experiencing. I'd really appreciate a little help.

The steps I follow are:

1. Open the report in the PBI service and download the .pbix file.

2. Open the .pbix file locally with PBI Desktop and make my changes to the visualizations. I'm not (as far as I know) making changes to the data model.

3. Click PUBLISH, select the current workspace.

Result

- A new version of the report appears in the workspace along with its own new dataset.

- the original report remains unchanged still linked to its shared data set

I can make small edits to reports using the online editor in PBI Service. That works well. I just keep the report.

Hi @timhopson

Please make sure when you republishing the report, the file name didn't change. otherwise, it will appear as a new dataset and new report.

Besides, I just found there's a same question you raised in other threads has been resolved:

Hi @timhopson ,

when I download a report with a shared dataset connection, the live connection remains.

Only the "initial" report is together with the dataset in one PBIX file.

Did I answer your question?

Thanks @mwegener ,

That is what I had hoped would happen in my case. I don't know if it makes a difference however my dataset imports data from SQL Server and also from an excel workbook hosted on Sharepoint.
