Powerbi PBIP cannot save RLS (access to \roles is denied)

Hi

i'm working since more than an year with PBIP format, with multiple reports built. One is using RLS and is working fine.

When trying to setup a new model with RLS, as soon as I create the rls setup on the model, I have an error with saving.

Error Message:
Access to the path 'C:\Users\anddetog\OneDrive - Publicis Groupe\Documents\Clienti\[client name]\[client name]\[report name].SemanticModel\definition\roles' is denied.

Ever happeed to you?

Hi both. I haven't tried to move to a non-one drive fodler (and I would not be a solution since if I do I'll lose all the benefits of shared one drive folder). HOWEVER what fixed was deleting the \roles folder and saving again. PowerBI recreated the folder, I guess with the right permissions.

Hi @adetogni ,

Thank you for reaching out to Microsoft Community.
I understand that you are facing an issue while saving RLS on your PBIP file.

Try moving the PBIP project folder to a local, non-synced location, then re-open it in Power BI, make your RLS edits, and see if the save works without error.

As per your statement I can see that the location is under OneDrive, OneDrive syncing might lock or interfere with file access, causing a write permission error.

Right-click the OneDrive icon in the system tray.

Choose "Pause syncing" (for 2 hours or more).

Make and save the RLS changes.

Resume syncing afterward.

Try again by running Power BI Desktop as Administrator and also make sure user account has Full Control on the data source.

If this helped, please mark it as the solution so others can benefit too. And if you found it useful, kudos are always appreciated.

Thanks,
Chaithra E.

Hi @adetogni I think the error occurs due to permissions issues on the OneDrive-synced folder where the PBIP file is saved. Move the file to a local directory like C:\Projects to avoid sync conflicts and ensure write access. Run Power BI as Administrator to grant elevated permissions and verify that no antivirus software is blocking the folder. If the issue persists, save a new copy of the file in a different location and reapply the RLS changes.
