Power bi sql connection

Hello,

I'm new on Power bi. I have a code on SQL server and I want to connect Power bi to visualize my codes but my SQL server on a virtual machine (VMware). When I clicked get-data on power bi it requires server name then says server name not found. My server name is correct checked many times. Also, I realized my server name is fully uppercase but after entering the server name power bi shows the server name fully lowercase.

Do you think it might be a reason?

Hi @metecakmak ,

This is an article describes how to connect to your SQL on Azure virtual machine (VM).

More details: Connect to a SQL Server virtual machine on Azure

  • The way a client connects to a SQL Server VM differs depending on the location of the client and the networking configuration.

If you provision a SQL Server VM in the Azure portal, you have the option of specifying the type of SQL connectivity.

  • If you want to connect to your SQL Server database engine from the internet, select Public for the SQL connectivity type in the portal during provisioning.
  • When you choose Private for the SQL connectivity type in the portal, Azure configures most of the settings identical to Public. The one difference is that there is no network security group rule to allow outside traffic on the SQL Server port (default 1433).

I have found a similar post, please refer to the following topic to see if it helps you.

  • You need to allow remote connections for your SQL in VM. follow steps from the article to solve the problem.

@metecakmak can you connect to SQL server thru any other tools like SSMS from your machine? If yes, use the same credentials, connection in Power BI.
