Power BI Premium - only 8 refreshes per day?

Hi - I just upgraded to Power BI Premium because I wanted my dashboard to refresh more frequently. However, the settings for my dashboard's Semantic Model still only shows 8 refreshes per day. How do I get my model to refresh more frequently? Thanks!

Hi @jfishbac - good to know that has helped with the refresh side of things.

Regarding the licences, that's not my experience but we may not have the same set-up. Our organisation went from a) not having any Premium capacity to b) having Premium capacity that selected workspaces were assigned to. Note: we've never assigned Premium-per-user licences.

Before upgrading to Premium:

  • I'm a developer with a Pro licence
  • Viewers needed a Pro licence to access content I created
  • Users with a free licence could not access it.

After upgrading to Premium:

  • Any content that is in a workspace that is assigned to the Premium capacity can now be seen by users with either a Pro licence or a Free licence.
  • I still need a Pro licence to develop content.
  • Any content that is in a workspace that is in Pro licence mode still requires users to have a Pro licence to view it. Users with a free licence cannot access content in a workspace with a Pro licence

This matches what Microsoft says should happen here: Types of licenses for Power BI business users - Power BI | Microsoft Learn

Something else worth noting that has caught me out - if you split your reports and semantic models into different workspaces, users need access to both artifacts. So, if I have a report in a Premium capacity workspace but the semantic model it uses is in a Pro workspace, users with a Free licence won't be able to use the report. When I upgrade the semantic model workspace to Premium, users with a Free licence can then access the report.

Sorry for the long post. Hope that helps!

Good morning @jfishbac,

In addition to what @m13eam  mentioned about coverting workspace to Premium, you'll notice your 48 refreshes must be on the :00 and :30 minute marks.  Like @sjoerdvn said you can use a REST API call and put this in something like ADF.  You could also trigger refreshes from Power Automate if that is something your ecosystem uses

Hi - first of all, has the workspace that holds your dashboard's semantic model been moved into a Premium Capacity? Workspaces can stay in Pro after upgrading the wider tenant to be in Premium. Once you have Premium available, you can then move individual workspaces into Premium.

Go to the workspace > Workspace settings > Premium. It should then look something like the below with premium capacity selected, and you should be able to add more than 8 refreshes.

This was *part* of the problem. The above from m13eam is correct - this gives me, the developer, more refresh options. But now that I've changed the license mode, anyone in my organization who wants to access my dashboard ALSO has to have a Premium license??? Is that true? That's been my observation at least.

I've just tested it and I think you've found an issue! Microsoft states you can refresh up to 48 times per day in Premium Data refresh in Power BI - Power BI | Microsoft Learn

For dataflows this is the case for me, but for semantic models it seems to be capped at 8 times per day.

You can always trigger a refresh by a REST API call.
