Power BI Matrix Chart – Static and Dynamic Column Configuration

Hi Power BI Experts,

I’m trying to build a matrix chart in Power BI based on the structure shown in the attached screenshot. In this setup:

  • The first three columns — Category, Sub Category, and KPI — are static and serve as identifiers for each report.
  • The remaining columns represent monthly data from January to December and are dynamic.

These static columns are not part of the report dataset itself but are essential for mapping each row to its respective category and sub-category. I need guidance on how to model this in Power BI so that the static columns remain fixed, while the monthly data updates dynamically.

Could you please advise on the best approach to structure the data or configure the matrix chart accordingly?

Thanks in advance for your support!

HI @PrakashPalle

First normalize your data by Unpivoting as below so that it gives you a flexible matrix that updates automatically as new months are added or filtered.

For Matrix, simply add Category, Sub Category, and KPI to Rows, Month to Columns and KPI Value to Values.

Hi @PrakashPalle
