Power BI Import Method or Use SSAS Tabular Model and use as data source in Power BI

Hello ,

 

Could you let me know which approach is batter and what is pros and cons between following two

 

1) Create SSAS tabular model which is refreshed periodiacally and use it as data source in Power BI using Direct Query method.

Here Power BI does not store data in it and will be used just as interface for reporting. Source will SSAS Tabular Model

 

2) Store Data in Power BI using Import Methode and refresh the data in Power BI periodically 

 

Which method has more advantage and what are pros and cons in each method. 

Can you please help me please

Hi @MaheshDadhich,

 

Based on my research, here are the basics.

Import - extracts the data from your database and pulls it into the Power BI Desktop

Connect live – Creates a direct connect to your data. The speed of your data source will determine performance. Here that means making a direct connection from Power BI Desktop to your SSAS Tabular model.

 

Pros:

Import -

  1. Gives you the full suite of transformation and data manipulation in the Desktop.
  2. We can combine different data sources together.

Connect live –

  1. Is "live", no need to schedule a refresh (In the Service)
  2. Leaves the data in the data source. So if your data is large, then connect live is suitable here.

 

Cons:

Import –

  1. There is a 1 GB limit to the Desktop if you plan on publishing to the PBI Service
  2. Can only be refreshed up to 8x a day by setting up a scheduled refresh (In the Service)

Connect live –

  1. Limits your ability to manipulate data in the Desktop (calculated column, relationship etc..)
  2. You are limited to just one data source/database you selected
