Parameters usage in datasource

I need someone's help. Present I have connected to Dev database. In power query editor I have created two parameters.  One parameter for server name and another parameter for database name. After close and apply . Before publishing the report to power bi service.  Do we need to map the parameters in datasource settings?

Is it fine without mapping the parameters in datasource and directly publishing the dataset to workspace. In workspace only if we change the parameters to test server . Is it fine ?

Hi @muktapurc  - Yes you are correct, No need to mapping the parameters in datasource. Pls follow below steps.

  1. After creation of Parameters in Power Query editor. Just you can close & apply.
  2. Then publish the report to DEV workspace. Upon publish sucessfull.
  3. Navigate to Power BI services and click on deployement pipelines.
  4. After opening deployement pipelines click on comparison then select your report and dataset and then click deploy to QA.
  5. After sucessfull deployement, Click on QA/TEST deployement rules. as shown in image. suparnababu8_0-1732520731938.png

Hi @muktapurc - Yes, it's fine to directly publish the dataset without mapping the parameters in data source settings in Power BI Desktop. After publishing to the Service, you can change the parameters to the Test server, and it should work, provided your gateway and credentials are correctly configured.

Keepinmind: When working with parameters for server name and database name in Power BI, the workflow and considerations for publishing to the Power BI Service depend on how you've set things up.
