Hi, @Anonymous

I wonder if there are some error message in 'Refresh Histroy' in Power BI Service and the status of the gateway is online. There are three main data access scenario:

  • A dataset uses data sources that reside on-premises
  • A dataset uses data sources in the cloud
  • A dataset uses data from both, on-premises and cloud sources

If your dataset uses a data source that Power BI can't access over a direct network connection, you must configure a gateway connection for this dataset before you can enable a refresh schedule or perform an on-demand data refresh.

You may go to 'Manage Gateway' in Power BI Serivice and add data source definition to the corresponding gateway. Also make sure your gateway admin adds your user account to the list of users with permissions to use the data source. Then The dataset settings page lets you select an enterprise gateway with a matching data source that you have permission to use. Make sure you map the correct data source definition to your data source.

Finally you can configure-scheduled-refresh or click 'Refresh now' for the corresponding dataset to refresh data.

Best Regards

Allan

@Anonymous you should check in power bi service, click on dataset -> settings and check refresh history and see if there is any error. Most likely when one published the report first time, you have to enter your credentials on published dataset in power bi service.

I dont see any issue when looking into refresh hisotry in BI service. What are other options to trace the issue?

Will it refresh in the desktop client if you hit Refresh All?

Yes ,it is allowing refresh all.

If the desktop refresh works, but the service does not, then it is most likely a permission issue with the gateway accessing the data. Except you said it was Project Online. How are you connecting? Is that a gateway data source? I don't see any connector in Power BI for that, so I don't know what the underlying source is.

I do know that if you are using any special code in the Advanced options area of a SQL Server connection your gateway must have higher than normal permissions to excecute the code, otherwise it works fine on the desktop and fails in the service. But I don't know enough about Project Online via Power BI and how that connection works. Just tossing this out there as being a permission issue that is a bit more trouble than "if it works on the desktop it should work on the service."

Could you provide more specifics on the connector?
