ODBC connector to Power BI Report Builder

Hi Supporters!

If I want to use ODBC connector to connect to Oracle database in Report builder for the FIRST TIME, what do I need to do and from where do I need to install the ODBC connector/ driver?

1 ACCEPTED SOLUTION

Hi @AsNa_92 ,

Power BI Report Builder requires the 64-bit version of the ODBC driver. Ensure you download the 64-bit version to avoid compatibility issues.
It's generally a good practice to use the latest version of the ODBC driver to benefit from the latest features and security updates.Typically, you only need to download and install the ODBC driver itself. The Basic Package is not necessary unless specified by the driver documentation.
If you are using a specific database like Oracle, ensure you download the corresponding ODBC driver version that matches your database version and operating system.

Hi @AsNa_92 - To connect to an Oracle database using an ODBC connector in Power BI Report Builder

  1. Download and Install the Oracle ODBC Driver:

    • Go to the Oracle Instant Client Downloads.
    • Choose the version of Oracle Instant Client that matches your Oracle database version and operating system (32-bit or 64-bit).
    • Download the ODBC Package for Instant Client.
    • Extract the downloaded package to a directory of your choice.
  2. Configure the ODBC Driver:

    • After extracting the files, you may need to add the Instant Client directory to your system’s PATH environment variable.
    • Then, run the odbc_install.exe file within the Instant Client directory to register the Oracle ODBC driver with your system.
  3. Set Up an ODBC Data Source (DSN):

    • Go to ODBC Data Source Administrator (search for it in the Start menu).
    • Choose either the System DSN or User DSN tab, depending on whether you want the DSN to be available to all users or just your user account.
    • Click Add, select the Oracle ODBC driver, and then configure the DSN with your Oracle database connection details (e.g., TNS service name, username, and password).
  4. Connect to Oracle from Power BI Report Builder:

    • Open Power BI Report Builder.
    • In the Data Source Properties dialog, select ODBC as the connection type.
    • Choose the DSN you created, enter your credentials, and test the connection.

Hope the above steps helps to configure.

Hi @rajendraongole1

In the URL to download the ODBC driver, there are so many version. Can I choose any version or it depends on my report builder version?

Also, do I have to download and install the Basic Package as well or only the ODBC driver?
