Non-consistent Matrix Can't Load Data Error

I have an admittedly, fairly complex data model that I built for my matrix visualizations, but I am encountering some strange behavior.

1. Every existing matrix works fine

2. If I copy an existing matrix and reconfigure it as needed, that works fine

3. If I copy an existing matrix, delete everything, switch it to several other visuals then back to a matrix, it still works fine

4. I have even closed and restarted Power BI

5. However, if I start with a new matrix (that isn't a copy), I get a Can't Load Data Error even if the configuration is identical to an existing working matrix

It's like my existing matrices have drunk some magic elixir that the new ones haven't, but I am worried about long term stability.

What could be causing this behavior? Is this some known Power BI bug/issue?

OK, I found this issue quite by accident. It turns out that a new matrix comes with column and row subtotals enabled which my measures break. I have to make sure they are turned off. Of course, Power BI developers in their infinite wisdom disable access to any formatting until you add something.

So, here is my workaround. Click a new matrix. Add a measure or table field that doesn't break it. Click on the formatting and turn off the subtotals for Columns and Rows. Now, build your matrix as needed.

The fact that I found the problem and solution makes me feel conflicted.
