New Calculated Column with Basic IF Satement

I have an exisitng column [Thing] with data say ("blue", "green", "four"). I want a new calculated column that is

If [Thing] = "four", then "number", else "color"

How would I create this?

Hi @taylorr ,

According to your description, here are my steps you can follow as a solution.

(1) This is my test data.

vtangjiemsft_0-1701415189266.png

(2) We can create a calculated column.

Column = IF('Table'[Thing]="four","number","color")

(3) Then the result is as follows.

If the above one can't help you get the desired result, please provide some sample data in your tables (exclude sensitive data) with Text format and your expected result with backend logic and special examples. It is better if you can share a simplified pbix file. Thank you.

there are like 4, but if it is one specifc thing I want it to be "number" and everything else to be "color". Binary

if it's literally as simple as looking for a single value, and returning "number," and then "color" for everything else, you basically already have the logic written in your original post. Just use the DAX IF function. Or you can use the conditional column tool in Power Query.

I'm 100% newbie coming from Tableau. I tried writing the quation 100 times and it does not work. Do I use single quotes? Double? None? Commas? This is the eaxact formual I am trying where [INITIATEDBYAPP] is a text field:

IF [INITIATEDBYAPP] = "CITYSOURCED_CID_197" THEN "GODUBLIN" ELSE "INTERNAL"

I get and error that states: "Token Eof expected"

So, you're wanting to create a category column for your [Thing], it sounds like. How many possible distinct values are in [Thing]?
