Need Help with Data Label Disappearing

I’m running into an issue where a data label disappears whenever I adjust the Date slicer on my variance visual.

The label shows up for some date ranges, but when I change the maximum date—so the variance is calculated from the minimum to the new maximum—the data label sometimes vanishes. The screenshots below show that the only change between the two views is the selected max date.

When the label disappears, the corresponding measure also stops appearing as a selectable series under the Data Labels section in the Format visual pane.

Has anyone seen this behavior before or know what might be causing the label to appear inconsistently?

Hi @FinanceTucker

Try replacing BLANK values with 0 using a measure with ISBLANK function. Check visual level filters to remove any 'Show items when value' filters on the measure. Reset data labels, in format pane go to Data labels then Turn OFF/ON, ensure measure is checked under 'Show series as'. Also, please use ALLSELECTED dax function if date filtering affects calculation context.

Hi @FinanceTucker

Is it possible for you to provide a sample PBIX file with some dummy data with the issue you are facing, so we can check it?

@FinanceTucker

Not sure this information helps, but wanted to share a similar experience with data labels.
I created a similar chart earlier Screenshot 2026-01-18 at 9.16.41 PM.png

and the data label gets disappeared for few instances. After doing some deubugging I realized that power bi is performing data sampling,

https://learn.microsoft.com/en-us/power-bi/create-reports/desktop-high-density-sampling

meaning it is only plotting few data points out of all the data points. When I selected any date which was removed during data sampling as my max date for the variance line, the measure I wrote to display the variance data label is not able to capture the date value. Due to which the data label appeared blank.

I handled it using some dax logic. However you can also turn off data sampling if you want

https://learn.microsoft.com/en-us/power-bi/create-reports/desktop-high-density-sampling#how-to-turn-...

May be check if this is reason for the issue you are facing.

I hope this helps

Hi @FinanceTucker

The issue turned out to be how I was calculating the label position. Because my X-axis uses biweekly data, centering the variance graphic by using (Max Date − Min Date) / 2 was causing the problem. Your suggestion to look into using BLANK() in my measures helped me identify and fix the issue. Thanks!
