Need Advice on Incremental Refresh!

Hello,

I need some advice on using Incremental Refresh and just want to make sure my plan will work. I have a small dataset that I want to snapshot either daily or ideally weekly. If I use the Incremental Refresh feature, will that let me keep track of past data going forward? I’m not really sure how Incremental Refresh works, but my goal is to store historical data for the following fields. Since my data doesn’t have a date field, I was thinking of using the current local time (today’s date) to track it.

Does this sound like it will work? I’m trying to avoid using Power Automate flows if possible.

My Date looks like below,

How to set up refresh

If this works, I’m thinking I should use the "Choose a DateTime column to filter by " column as "TodayDate" and store rows from the past 13 months. For the "Refresh rows from the past" setting, what should I choose? Should it be set to the past 1 day, or is there a different value that makes more sense? I just want to make sure I’m setting this up correctly.

Let me know your thoughts!

Thank you so much

Hi,

FIrst of all dont forget to change type of your date column to date, and yes, your plan will work if you:

  1. Create a SnapshotDate field to use as your date marker.
  2. Set up incremental refresh  based on this field.
  3. Publish to the Power BI Service and set up a regular refresh schedule.

This setup will ensure that Power BI retains historical data snapshots based on the date you specify and only refreshes recent data as per your configured policy.

You can learn how to configure incremental refresh by the link: Configure incremental refresh and real-time data
