Native SQL

It is great that we can use native SQL when creating a connection to a database. The issue we have is many of our users are not well versed with writing native SQL; Oracle / MS SQL or others. We're even getting some users selecting * from a number of tables then doing the equivalent of a where clause in the Data Model. This causes some models to take many hours to refresh when the reality is the data model is a very small subset of the entire data being returned by the SQL server. They can use client tools to build the SQL statements but many reporting tools have user interfaces to add in the objects and create the links. It would be much better to be able to have a user interface to create the statement or even perhaps some logic to look at the data being returned then advise if the resultant data model is significantly smaller than the original. Thanks

Hi @saj,

We can enter the sql statement here directly to filter the data in advance.

Thanks @v-frfei-msft but I'm not sure you read the email. We know we can write native SQL thanks.

If you have an idea to improve the query building experience, submit it here: https://ideas.powerbi.com/forums/265200-power-bi-ideas

This challenge could maybe be solved with additional user training, particularly around the Query Folding capabilities in Power Query: https://blog.crossjoin.co.uk/2017/06/11/query-folding-and-writing-your-own-sql-queries-in-power-quer...
