Multi-Level Nested Hierarchy in Power BI Treemap Without Using Drill-Down

I am using a Treemap visual in Microsoft Power BI to display hierarchical data. Currently, I have configured:

  • Group → Main Category
  • Details → Subcategory
  • Values → Sales/Measure

This creates one level of nested rectangles successfully, where the main category contains subcategory rectangles.

However, my requirement is to display an additional nested layer inside the existing subcategory rectangles without using drill-down functionality. I want the hierarchy to appear simultaneously in a fully expanded view

Expected behavior:

  • First rectangle → Category
  • Second rectangle inside category → Subcategory
  • Third rectangle inside subcategory → Product

I would like to know:

  1. Does the native Power BI Treemap support more than one nested “Details” hierarchy level?
  2. Is there any workaround to achieve multiple visible nested rectangle layers without drill-down?
  3. Are there any recommended custom visuals or techniques for displaying 3-level hierarchical treemaps in a single view?

Any suggestions or best practices would be appreciated.

Hello @AnujSahay,

The native Microsoft Power BI Treemap only supports two hierarchy levels being shown at once:

  • Group
  • Details

So a setup like:

Category → Subcategory

works fine, but adding another visible nested layer like:

Category → Subcategory → Product

is not supported in the standard Treemap visual unless you use drill-down.

Docs:

A few possible workarounds are:

  • using a custom hierarchical Treemap visual from AppSource
  • trying visuals like Decomposition Tree or Sunburst
  • combining hierarchy fields into one label column (not true nesting, but sometimes helps)

For a fully expanded 3-level Treemap, a custom visual is probably the best option right now.

The treemap stops at two levels in its layout step, so u keep Category → Subcategory in the treemap and show Product in a small separate custom visual beside it for a full three‑level view. this is the only setup that stays fully expanded without drill‑down and works the same in every report.

Hello,

I’m not completely sure, but from what I know the native Power BI Treemap only supports one visible nested level at a time, so you usually can’t show Category → Subcategory → Product all expanded together without drill-down

My advice is to search something in the custom visual, they usually give the possibility to add this type of functionality

Best regards,
Daniele
