Hello all,
Issue: After recent changes to my report it is now taking 2+ minutes for changes to measures to process (I get stuck on the "Working on it" window), Create a new measure (Same "working on it" window), or delete a measure ("Queries Metadata" "Loading Data to model' Window)
Changes made: I converted to a new database with the same core data. The new database is more normalized, better structured and has far fewer columns in the main Fact table. However I did approximately double the number of rows in the main fact table - 5.5 million up to 10.5 million rows, and there were a number of subsiquant addition to various dimension tables (maybe 750k rows total). The overall size of the database decreased by 15% though as a result of the improvements, regardless of having about double the amount of rows. After I converted all of the tables in Power Query to connect to the new database and added the additional tables that were the result of the increased normalization, and rebuilt my data model, I started to notice that it was taking forever to make changes to my DAX measures. All of the DAX performs great, the visual in the report still respond quickly and respond great to all End user inputs, the issue is just with making changes to a measure, creating a measure, or deleting a measure. ( It may also be of note that the size of my PBIX file decreased aprox. 25% from 438MB to 328MB after the swithc to the new database)
Where this gets really interesting is that one of the trouble shooting approaches I took was filtering out all the new transactions in Power Query, so I was only left with the original core dataset. I assumed getting rid of the extra rows would reconcile the problem and I would at least be able to identify the root cause. Alas that had no affect. It took just as long to Change, Create, and Delete measures.
I am at a complete loss as to what could possibly have caused this, and am out of ideas for troubleshooting. Has anyone else experienced this before, have a solution, or any ideas for more troubleshooting?
P.s. I turned my computer off and back on too 😄
Thanks in advance for your assistance.
@Anonymous I've experience this behavior but not sure I have ever found a root cause for it. Definitely slows things down though during development. Would be interested in other people's experiences and thoughts on this subject.
