Matrix Visual - Potential Bug

Version: 2.149.911.0 64-bit (November 2025)

The three screenshots below pretty much describes the issue.

1. At the parent level, there is a gray background for the entire row

2. Collapse all

3. Gray background disappears, parent row's background is "white"

Has anyone seen this? This is probably related to Matrix visual bug ?? - Microsoft Fabric Community

Hi @ponyo_pankun

This doesn’t appear to be a bug, but rather expected Matrix behavior.

When the Matrix is expanded, the first-level rows are treated as parent / group header rows, and subtotal-related formatting applies to them.
If a background color is defined at that level, it will be shown while the hierarchy is open.

After Collapse All, the hierarchy is no longer active. The rows are rendered as regular leaf rows, not group headers, so subtotal or hierarchy-level formatting (including background color) no longer applies — which is why the background turns white.

That said, it’s completely understandable why this looks incorrect or inconsistent from a UX perspective. The data itself hasn’t changed, yet the visual appearance does, which can be confusing for users.

It might be worth opening an Idea to request more consistent styling behavior between expanded and collapsed states, or clearer separation between hierarchy formatting and regular row formatting.

Hi @ponyo_pankun  thanks for asking questions. @Ritaf1983  mentioned behind the logic why is showing like this.

Here is some alternet workaround you could try

Select the visual -> Under Visual -> Values -> Set same color (ex: white) for (Background Color and Alternate Background Color)

Also, i have noticed your Power BI Desktop version is not latest, so try with the latest version (2.149.1429.0)
