Map visual Support

I'm building a Power BI dashboard to visualize White Land Tax across individual land plots in Saudi Arabia, and I would really appreciate your help or guidance.

🔍 Objective:

Display each land parcel on a Saudi Arabia map using its latitude and longitude, and visually identify its tax classification using colors.

Requirements:

  1. Map Visual (with point plotting)

    • Use latitude and longitude columns to place markers on the map.

    • Each land should be categorized into one of the following zones:

      • 🟥 Red Zone – Full Tax

      • 🟨 Yellow Zone – Partial Tax

      • 🟩 Green Zone – Tax Exempted

    • Color code each point accordingly.

  2. A clean, interactive Power BI map showing:

    • Land plots pin-pointed using lat/long.

    • Colored by tax zone for quick visual insight. and lands/plots distance from these zones to be calculated as well

  3. If anyone has done something similar or has best practices to suggest (e.g., layering zones, using shape maps, custom tooltips), I’d love your input!

here is the test data i have

Hi @vjnvinod,
Thank you for reaching out to the Microsoft fabric community forum.

After thoroughly reviewing the details you provided, I was able to reproduce the scenario, and it worked on my end. I have used it as sample data on my end and successfully implemented it.

Dax Measure For Tax Zone Classification:

Tax Zone Classification =

SWITCH(

    TRUE(),

    'White Land Tax'[Land Status ( Developed / Undeveloped / Partially Developed/WIP)] = "Partially Developed", "Partial Tax",

    'White Land Tax'[Land Status ( Developed / Undeveloped / Partially Developed/WIP)] = "Undeveloped", "Full Tax",

    'White Land Tax'[Exemption from WLT (Yes or No)] = "Yes", "Tax Exempted",

    "Full Tax"

)

I am also including .pbix file for your better understanding, please have a look into it:

Hi @vjnvinod,
Thank you for reaching out to the Microsoft fabric community forum.

After reviewing the details you provided, I have identified few workarounds that may help resolve the issue. Please follow these steps:

Currently, the Shape Map visual in Power BI is still in preview and remains under development. While it does provide the ability to overlay custom regional boundaries (like zoning areas), it has functional limitations:

  • It does not support dynamic point plotting based on latitude/longitude.
  • It requires TopoJSON files for custom shapes (e.g., zoning regions).
  • Advanced interactions such as tooltips or layering with point markers are not fully supported yet.

Use Shape maps in Power BI Desktop (Preview) - Power BI | Microsoft Learn

To meet your objectives of plotting land parcels and visualizing tax zones with full interactivity, I recommend using the Azure Maps visual or Map visual. Use Azure Maps visual > "Bubble Layer" for points and Polygon Layer for zones. Use smart tooltips Create a tooltip page that appears when you hover over a land plot.

i have not been able to achieve this, do you have pbix to share? just to understand how you manage to get this workaround worked?
