Line and column - legend

I need to be able to include legend for both Line and Column values in a "Line and Column chart". How to get this work done?

Thanks,

Kripa

Hi @KripaShankar

It is not currently possible to use legends on both the line and column. Legend is supported on columns only.

Hi @KripaShankar ,

Thank you for posting your query in the Microsoft Fabric Community. In Power BI, the Line and Clustered Column chart supports only a single legend by default, typically associated with the column series.  Unfortunately, Power BI does not currently offer built in support for displaying separate legends for both the line and column series.  Thank you to all community members for sharing your valuable insights and workarounds.

Recommended Solution

You can create a combined legend for both line and column values by ensuring each series comes from a distinct measure.

  1. Select the Line and Clustered Column chart visual.
  2. Create separate measures for each data point .
  3. Add one measure to Column Values and the other to Line Values.
  4. Power BI will automatically generate a combined legend representing both series.

While this doesn’t provide separate legends for each, it ensures that both categories appear in the legend.

Hi @KripaShankar ,

Yeah, this one can be a bit tricky. The default Line and Column chart in Power BI only shows one legend — usually for the line values. If you want to show legends for both line and column series, here are a couple of workarounds:

  1. Use a combo chart
Create a Line and Clustered Column chart. Then, make sure each value (line and column) is coming from a different measure. Power BI will show a combined legend for both.

  2. Use a stacked column instead
If your column values can be stacked, switching to a stacked column + line chart sometimes helps with better legend control.

  3. Manual legend using shapes/text
If nothing works, you can manually add a legend using text boxes and colored shapes. Not ideal, but works for static reports.

Hope this helps!
