This will be a very vague question so I apologise in advance, but when I sat my Power BI PL-300 exam there was a question on line chart indicators that stumped me beacuse I haven't actually heard of them before.
I assumed that maybe I'd just forgetten about them but when I went to research them afterwards, I couldn't find a single thing about them and now I'm even more confused.
So I guess my question is, what are line chart indicators and more specifically what is their purpose?
Solved! Go to Solution.
Hi @questionz - it is referred as visual markers used in line charts to highlight specific data points, trends, or thresholds where we can present it as individual data points more visible.it helps quickly identify specific values on the chart without relying solely on the axis.
Hope this helps.

Hello @questionz
Line chart indicators in Power BI typically refer to markers or visual cues that highlight specific data points or trends within a line chart. These indicators can help users quickly identify important information or changes in the data. Here are some common types of line chart indicators and their purposes:
1. Data Markers
-Purpose: Highlight individual data points on the line chart.
-Usage: Useful for emphasizing specific values, such as peaks, troughs, or significant changes.
2. Trend Lines
-Purpose: Show the overall direction or trend of the data over time.
-Usage: Helps in understanding long-term patterns and trends.
3.Markers for Cross-Highlighting and Cross-Filtering
-Purpose: Indicate which data points are selected for cross-highlighting and cross-filtering other visuals on the report page.
-Usage: Enhances interactivity and helps in exploring relationships between different data points
If you see above example - This visual helps to quickly identify significant changes in the data, such as the highest and lowest points, making it easier to analyze trends and patterns. Explanations as mentioned below
- Blue Line: Represents the data trend over the months.
- Red Markers: Highlight the peak value in the data.
- Green Markers: Highlight the trough value in the data.
- Text Annotations: Indicate the specific values of the peaks and troughs.
I hope now you are clear. Thanks
Hi ,
Based on the description, when a significant event or milestones occured or a target is approaching, you can create an indicator in the line chart.

Hi @questionz
Line chart indicators in Power BI are visual cues added to line charts to highlight specific points or trends, such as data thresholds, anomalies, or significant changes over time. Their purpose is to make important information stand out for easier analysis. For example, you can use markers or color changes to show when a value exceeds a target or to indicate maximum/minimum points.
