Join direct query and imported data - stopped working recently

Hi,

I have a dashboard with the data model where I  join a direct query table with the imported data table on one column with the same values.

It used to work pretty well, I was able to display data using that join in many visuals.

Recently however all those visuals stopped showing data. There is no error, no message, just empty visual.  (table, KPI, chart).

It stopped working both in the power bi desktop and the service and there was no change to the dashboard and the underlying data model.

Any idea if there was any recent change to the way power bi processes the join and direct query? Any other thoughts what can be the reason?

Do I have a workaround to make it work again?

thx

@netea , difficult to say. Check if the imported table has data.

Check if you use the visual only on direct query table are you getting the data.

One visual-only on the import table and one only on the direct query will give you idea.

of course I did all the simple checks. The direct query returns data, and the column I use for joining has data and I can display it. Imported table : the same and I verified that I have the same values. The problem starts when I try to display both columns in the same visual: it is showing nothing.

@netea ,

can you share a sample of it. If you are joining and placing the data on a visual, did you check if there is any column placed which don't have relationship with these two.

In this scenario it is difficult to say which part is making issue, so assuming the thing s and postig.

@netea ,

Did you check the data on the model if it is proper or not?

I don't think it is due to the join. Please check if something has broken or also check if any report level filters applied.

And check if there is filter step applied unexpectedly.

I checked the data and the data model, everything's fine.

@netea , It's difficult to say then where it is breaking.

Please check with the filters. And try placing the columns on a tbale visual to check the data.

I checked all data without any filters and as I said: data is fine, no reason for it not to work.  it used to work and it stopped recently without any changes from my side (and anyone else as I have my local version and this one also stopped working)

I really think there was a change to the way power bi process the direct query data.

Any thoughts?

hi  @netea

I have tested on my side, it works well

do you mean when you put data from import table and directquery table into one visual, then it will show blank?

i think this should be something wrong with the fileds that you used to join the two tables.

for example:

"A" and "A ", the two row won't match beacuse there is blank in "A ", so they are not same.
