Issue with exporting data to excel from Power BI in teams desktop App

Hello everyone,

I'm encountering a recurring issue when exporting data from Power BI reports within the Microsoft Teams desktop application. Here's what's happening:

  • I open a Power BI report in Teams using the desktop app.

  • I select a visual and choose "Export data" to Excel.

  • The first export works as expected: I receive a confirmation popup stating the file was downloaded successfully, and the file appears in my local Downloads folder.

  • However, if I attempt to export data again during the same session, the confirmation popup appears, but no file is downloaded, and the file doesn't appear in the Downloads folder.

  • To perform another export, I have to completely close and reopen the Teams application. After restarting, the first export works again, but subsequent exports fail as described.

This issue is specific to the Teams desktop app. When I access the same report via the Power BI web service or Power BI Desktop, I can export data multiple times without any problems.

Has anyone else experienced this behavior? Is there a known workaround or fix?

Teams app is updated. Also windows.

Thank you in advance for your assistance!

Try using the Microsoft Teams web app (in a browser) instead of the desktop app for exporting Power BI visuals multiple times.

It works when I use the browser, but the requirement is to export from within the Teams desktop app.

This is a known issue with the Teams desktop app where only the first Power BI export works subsequent exports silently fail. You may try these workarounds if not using the web version,

  • Use the "Pop out" icon on the Power BI tab in the Teams desktop app before exporting. This avoids the export bug where only the first download works.
  • Press Ctrl + Shift + R to refresh Teams between exports.

Bhavin

Okay, thank you, I'll try to suggest those workarounds. When you say it’s a known bug, does that mean it’s been reported somewhere? I didn't find anything

This issue isn’t officially documented by Microsoft, but by "known issue," I meant that I have faced the same problem when exporting Power BI visuals in the Teams desktop app. Sorry for the confusion.

Thanks,
Bhavin

Ok thanks guys. It's not such a big deal...sometimes customers can be so picky. 😩
