Import and DIrectQuery modes cannot be combined in a single report

I'm using Power BI Desktop from January 2022 (version 2.100.1381.0 64-bit). I have seen many references to composite model capabilities but I cannot figure out how to create one. As an example, I can start by importing an XLSX file. If I then try to get data from an Oracle database, import is my only option. I have the same issue if I first create the direct query connection to the Oracle database and then try to import an XLSX. Power BI will tell me I must switch to import mode. I've watched a few videos where people setup composite models and they seem to follow the same steps but receive a different prompt that allows them to create a composite model. I was under the impression that composite models were available in the version of Power BI Desktop that I am using, but maybe I am wrong or maybe it's something my organization has disabled. Does anyone have any suggestions? Thanks!

Hi @gvanderbilt ,

Have you still have this error? The power bi desktop now supports composite models, so theoretically there should no error that prevents the use of composite models.

Thin link includes process of how to create composite model, you can first connect to oracle database through directquery and then import excel file.

At the same time, the two docs contain some introductions and considerations related to the composite model, hope these find you well:

@gvanderbilt I am using import and direct query in one file for quite some time.  The limitation is only with Live mode. It happens only when you want to have a transformation that is not supported in direct query.

Thanks for the confirmation! I don't think I'm using Live mode but I'll read a little more into it. I also haven't made any transformations yet. In my example, I've only imported a 3 column xlsx and then gone to "get data" to connect to an Oracle database. Import is the only option available.

I have the same issue. Just made a simple DirecQuery connection to a sql Server. Then when I try to import an excel It gives me this image.

I use PBI Desktop version 2.121.1642.0 64-bit (septembrie 2023).
