Implementation option is not available in SAP BW

Hi All,

I am trying to connect to BW data sources through Power BI, I got the access, Query Designer, and downloaded the SAP .Net Connector 3.0 however when I try to connect i'm not getting the two ratio buttons on the bottom which are shown in the job aid found here.

here is what I see in Power BI

HI @Ynr225 ,
The issue you're encountering, where the "Implementation" options (such as 2.0 using SAP .NET Connector and 1.0 using NetWeaver RFC) are not visible in your Power BI connection window, is likely due to a difference in environment configuration between your system and the user who can see those options. Even though you've downloaded the SAP .NET Connector 3.0, Power BI requires it to be correctly installed, not just downloaded.

It must be the 64-bit version if you're using 64-bit Power BI Desktop, and critical DLL files like sapnco.dll and sapnco_utils.dll need to be properly registered and accessible via your system’s PATH variable. If Power BI cannot detect these components, it won’t show the implementation options. Additionally, this issue could arise if you’re using the Microsoft Store version of Power BI Desktop, which may have limited features.

It's recommended to install the latest standalone version directly from Microsoft’s website. Another potential cause is missing registry settings or insufficient permissions, which can be resolved by running Power BI as Administrator. Lastly, some preview features in Power BI may need to be enabled under the Options menu to fully activate SAP-related features. By ensuring all these factors are correctly set up, the implementation options should become visible just like they are for other users.

Hi @Ynr225 ,

Thank you for reaching out to Microsoft Fabric Community.

Here are some Troubleshooting steps to resolve the issue:

Your system is likely missing one or both required SAP libraries that Power BI uses to determine the implementation mode. Specifically:

SAP .NET Connector 3.0 (for Implementation 2.0)

SAP NetWeaver RFC SDK (for Implementation 1.0)

1. Install the Required SAP Components
Make sure both of the following are installed on the same machine where Power BI is running:

SAP .NET Connector 3.0

  • Download from SAP (SAP credentials required)
  • Must be x64 version if your Power BI is 64-bit

SAP NetWeaver RFC SDK

  • This is not freely downloadable; you’ll need to get it from your SAP Basis team or administrator

2. Set Environment Variables
Make sure the system environment variable PATH includes the directories where the DLLs from both components are installed:

E.g., for .NET Connector: C:\Program Files\SAP\SAP .NET Connector 3.0\

For NetWeaver RFC SDK: something like C:\nwrfcsdk\lib\

3. Restart Power BI
After installing and setting paths:

Restart Power BI Desktop

Go to Get Data → SAP Business Warehouse Message Server

You should now see the two implementation options.

  • Ensure you use the same bit version for Power BI and SAP components (both must be 64-bit or both 32-bit).
  • Having Query Designer access is good, but not enough. The libraries are client-side dependencies, not access rights.
