How to use Heat Map properly? Can you use "use size as weight" to make heat map darker or lighter?

I think I'm having a fundamental misunderstanding to the "Use size as weight" option when Heat Map is on when using the Azure Map visualization.

I have some dummy data below. For example, let's say I am only interested in looking at employee data on the state level. I turned off labels.

The State column data category is already set to "State or Province". I put State in "Location" and Employee in "Size".

If I turn off the "use size as weight" option, it looks all the heat bubbles are about the same size and about the same darkness. If I turn it on, there is nothing.

If I turn on "3D column layer", the bars look correct.

I want the heat map to be darker where the employee size is larger, and lighter when the employee size is smaller. Below, where the columns are taller, the heat should be darker; where the columns are short, the heat should be lighter. I believe this should happen when you turn on "use size as weight", but it does not.

Is this possible? How do you use "use size as weight" properly?

Below, 3D column is on only for illustration. I want it off in the final result.

Current result: Heat map ON, use size as wieght OFF, 3D column layer ON

I forgot to mention that I know an alternate way to kind of do what I want. Use the "Filled Map" visualization, go to "Fill Colors" in Format > Conditional Formatting > Set the gradient based on the Employee column.

But I want to know if it's possible to use Azure Map and how.

Hi @user01  ,
Thank you for your response.
Yes. The field you're using for size should be numeric. If it is treated as text, the "use size as weight" option will not work correctly.

Please go through th above mentioned steps and check step by step again ,if still faces the same issue then please consider raising a support ticket for further assistance.

Hi @user01 ,

Thanks for reaching out to the Microsoft Fabric Community Forum about the issue you're experiencing.

Based on the screenshot provided, here are some steps that might help you get the required output:

  1. Ensure the field you're using for size is numeric. If it is treated as text, the "use size as weight" option won't work correctly.
  2. Turn on the Heat Map toggle and adjust the Radius and Intensity settings to fit your data. The radius controls the size of each data point, and the intensity controls the colour gradient.
  3. Switch on the "Use size as weight" option. This should make the heat map darker where the employee size is larger and lighter where it's smaller.
  4. Check that there are no other layers or settings that might conflict with the heat map visualization.

I've attached a screenshot for your reference.

Thanks, @v-pagayam-msft But it is still not working for me.

1. I set Location =  STATE (Text, State or Province) and Size = EMPLOYEE (Whole number, Uncategorized), OK

2. Adjusted radius and intensity, OK

3. Turn on "Use as weight", NOTHING, everything disappears. I adjust radius and intensity and there is still nothing. I also changed EMPLOYEE summarization to "Don't summarize", but it did not work.

4. I turned off all other layers. I don't know what setting could conflict. I did not adjust any settings. I started over.

Do you have any other ideas?

Hi @user01 ,

Thank you for your response. In the provided HeatMap toggle On screenshot, I have noticed that the radius and intensity settings were not adjusted. If you increase these values, you might see the changes in the visual. For your reference, I have attached the relevant documentation below.

Hi @v-pagayam-msft

Yes, adjusted those settings. I tried again. I see nothing. STATE column is "State or Province" data category, and Employee column is Whole Number.

It does really matter what values are in the Employee (size value) column, correct? As long as it is numeric?
