Hi,
I am trying to create my own PBI on usage metrics. To be able to do so, I would need to download the data of the "usage report metrics" into PBI desktop. The usage report metrics is a report that is automatically generated by PBI platform online.
I am able to have the data loaded into PBI desktop by using the "Power BI datasets" but then many features of PBI desktop are unavailable. For instance, I am not able to load other data sources (which is what I need to do for my purpose).
If someone has a suggestion for this, it would be much appreciated!
Thanks,
Kind regards,
Claire

Hi @Anonymous ,
According to the official article description:
Power BI Desktop uses a Live Connection to the Report Usage Metrics Model dataset. This cannot be changed to DirectQuery since the dataset is owned by Power BI. Attempting to do so will result in an error in Power BI Desktop.
When use Live Connection ,many features of PBI desktop are unavailable. This is dictated by the program and cannot be changed.
You can try Power BI Audit logs
Track user activities in Power BI - Power BI | Microsoft Docs

We can now switch from a Live Connection to DirectQuery. This is possible because the Composite model's capabilities allow us to treat the data source differently, enabling DirectQuery functionality.

1. It is automatic, but only to a certain extent. If you don't consume the data it will stop being produced after a while. Don't rely on it.
2. You should be able to convert it from live connection to direct query with a more recent version of Power BI Desktop.
