How to apply the changes in PowerBI Desktop if the update is not possible

How to apply the changes in PowerBI Desktop if the data update is not possible - there is no connection to the source, for which I  create the report?

I build reports on my home computer. Connect to the enterprise source from home there is no way - I can only connect on job computer.
I am creating a source with "localhost" (http://prntscr.com/cwq7iz)  which will be work on job computer, but not on home PC - on a home computer get error when PowerBI Desktop applies  changes ( http://prntscr.com/cwq7ok ).
But is it possible to ignore the error and still apply changes when use home computer, and publish report on PowerBI Service ? And then connect to on-prem gateway, The report would be updated then

I what create report on home PC, set right source (which dont work on home PC)  as this report is on another PC, publish and then connet on-prem gatewat to it.

@googlogmob If all of the changes that you want to make can be done outside of query editor (Edit Queries) then it should work regardless of whether you have connectivity to the source or not. So make your changes in power bi desktop using pbix file and publish to power bi service from your home computer.

I make changes in Query Editor (set up the server IP in source string).
After Editor closing always appears window with aplling

Can I apply changes maked in Query Editor and with errors in updating?

try to convert your server IP into parameter that will be used in query.

Then you have a possibility to manage parameter value without entering query editor

hohlick, but I can not on a home computer to apply any changes, because there is no access to the source.

Because the home computer dont have access to the source, therefore, change IP through manage parameter still does not allow to apply the changes

I have a test report based on Excel file.

  1. Changed its source to non-excisting file. Of course PBI Desktop raise a DataSource.Error. I am ignored it, ok
  2. "Close  & Apply" - an error message about DataSource.Error
  3. "Publish" -> "Save changes? -> ok
  4. Then message appears that there are some changes that was not applied. Select "Apply later"
  5. It asked me to replace dataset (may be in your case there will be no such message, dont know). I select replace
  6. Ok, report published.
  7. Go to PowerBi service, find your dataset on the left, click three dots right to its name, select "Refresh now"

Try this path with test report where you connect to your remote server and check whether it could work, then, if ok, repeat these steps with main report.

hohlich, It turns out, we must first select the correct source, first  apply it on job computer, and only after that PBIX file can be copied to a home computer, and build reports on home PC

But if needs to make changes in PowerQuery we the need to re-copy the PBIX-file on job desktop, and apply only there

I think the solution is also in VPN..

@googlogmob, as far as I can get, it prevents your report to be published at all, yes?

Yes, I want to publish one report for several servers whis different source and same connection strings

@googlogmob

No. It's not possible. In your scenario, your changes are applied within Query Editor, you must have the data source connected successfully. Otherwise your report will not be allowed to publish. Since your data source is limited access on your Home-PC, even you publish your report, Power BI will connect the data source via the Enterprise/Personal Gateway installed on your Home-PC which will still fail. I suggest you use Proxy for your network and you can configure Proxy setting for On-Premise Gateway. See: Configuring proxy settings for the On-premises Data Gateway
