How to add live excel and live sharepoint list as two different datasources for PowerBI?

HI
I am trying to create a dashboard where my data sources are an excel file (where people input values on a daily basis) and another is a sharepoint list (which people edit daily). I want to create a dashboard with thse data sources.

When I first push 'Get data' and add the excel dataset. It gets loaded but the 'Get data' button gets disabled (not allowing me to add my second dataset).

Interestingly, When I first add Sharepoint, the 'Get data' button is still enabled and when I try to add my excel dataset. The dataset gets missing from my PowerBi datasets.

Sometimes I get this error (below image) but when I press 'Add local model' and submit. I get error. Pls help

Hi @PreetamRathod ,

According to your description, one possible solution is to use the "Combine Files" option in Power BI to merge the data from your Excel file and Sharepoint list into a single dataset. To do this, you can follow these steps:

1. Click on "Get Data" and select "Combine Files" from the options.

2. Choose your Excel file and select the sheet that contains your data.

3. Choose your Sharepoint list and select the columns that you want to include.

4. Power BI will automatically merge the data from both sources into a single dataset.

Alternatively, you can also try adding the data sources separately and then merging them using the "Merge Queries" option in Power BI. To do this, you can follow these steps:

1. Click on "Get Data" and select your Excel file.

2. Click on "Edit" to open the Power Query Editor.

3. Click on "New Source" and select your Sharepoint list.

4. Use the "Merge Queries" option to combine the data from both sources.

It sounds like you are having some problems connecting to your data sources in Power BI.

The error message "A DirectQuery connection is required" means that you need to use DirectQuery mode to connect to your data sources. DirectQuery mode allows you to connect to live data sources, so that the data in your Power BI reports is always up-to-date.

However, DirectQuery mode can also be more demanding on your resources, so it is not always the best option. If you are only making occasional changes to your data sources, then you may want to use Import mode instead. Import mode creates a copy of your data in Power BI, so that you can work with it offline.

To switch to DirectQuery mode, you need to add a local model to your file. This is a permanent change, so make sure that you are sure that you want to do this.

If you are getting an error when you try to add a local model, then it is possible that there is a problem with your data source. Try checking the connection settings and make sure that the data source is accessible.

Here are some additional things to keep in mind:

  • You can only connect to one data source per query in DirectQuery mode.
  • If you are connecting to a large data source, then you may want to use Power BI Premium to improve performance.
  • If you are using DirectQuery mode, then you need to refresh your data sources regularly to ensure that your reports are always up-to-date.
