How to Implement Comment Write-Back to Excel (OneDrive/SharePoint) from Power BI Dashboard?

I'm working on an Dashboard in Power BI and would like to implement a comment write-back functionality.

The idea is to allow users to input comments directly in the dashboard, and have those comments written back to the underlying Excel file stored on OneDrive or SharePoint.

Goal:

  • Users interact with the dashboard.
  • They can enter comments related to specific data points (e.g., rows, segments).
  • These comments should be saved to the Excel file that serves as the data source.

Constraints & Context:

  • The Excel file is stored on OneDrive/SharePoint (modern workspace, connected via OneDrive for Business).
  • Data is imported into Power BI via the standard Excel connector.
  • The dashboard is published and shared via the Power BI Service.

Questions:

  • Is native write-back to Excel from Power BI possible without third-party tools?
  • What are recommended approaches to implement this functionality (Power Apps, Power Automate, etc.)?
  • Has anyone successfully implemented something similar, and if so, could you share your experience or resources?

Hi @Akshaymanjunath

Power BI Workspaces used to be able to host Excel Workbooks in them. When they did it was possible for the user to write in the workbook then switch back to the report sadly this feature has been removed. I do not believe there is another Native way of doing this apart from the user writing directly into the Excel document.

Personally I have used the Power App method multiple times:

There is also the new Translytical Task Flows:

Finally there are third party tools, this is a random one:
