When I am writing Dax formulas that contain a Date column type, it always give me the alternative of adding right after each date column's name a .[date], .[Year], etc. I have noticed that it is not always needed and affect sometimes the use of hierarchies. Can somebody please explain how is this really use and what the implications are in the visualizations? Thanks!!!!

This means the date column is in a date hierarchy, you can drill down the visual in several level like year, month, day. You can also use .[Year], .[Month] or .[Day] to achieve year, month and day easily in dax statement.
