How do I speed up my refresh/or reduce the number of rows to refresh?

Hi

I'm relatively new to PowerBi and have done a quick search, but one of the responses had been deleted, so apologies for asking again here.

I have a data model which has one table dataset that contains over 4.5million rows.  The data set is required (it includes timesheet entries).  However, these timesheet entries go back over 25 years and realistically, the data I'm working with is within the last 5-10 years.

When I refresh the data, save or open the desktop model it takes over 10 minutes to build.

Is there a way that I can tell my dashboard not to refresh the data that is older than a specified date.  So for example, I would not expect to see any of the rows updated that are say, 10 years or older.  However, some of these rows are probably updated more recently when time is written off or billed.  So, I would need the most recent years refreshed.

Thank you in advance.

Kind regards

Nikki

Hello @nikki11,

yes, as @sanalytics  mentioned the best way to reach what you want is to do an incremental refresh,

I'll add a video that explains everything you should know about incremental refresh.

also you can perform a star schema data model for better performance
check this about star schema https://learn.microsoft.com/en-us/power-bi/guidance/star-schema

you can also check this article regarding power BI optimization
