Why?
It's a key visual in our reports and there is no free alternative. It's not the best visual in the world but it's the only one that produces what we need.
Are MS stupid, do they intentionally try to piss off customers?
Solved! Go to Solution.
Do you currently have a copy of the visual install file stored somewhere safe? If this is the case, your needs are covered for the present. Again, the project is Open Source, and appears mature without development. This is another reason folks generally are conservative and avoid custom visuals as part of the development process and risk identification effort.
Hi @Anonymous - Sometimes, we may face deprecation or discontinuation of custom visuals in power bi
you can replace it with new custom visuals as per your reqwuirements. This might involve reconfiguring the data fields and formatting settings to match the new visual's requirements.
Below are supportive heatmap visuals. Check it.
Note: you can check regularly check Power BI's official blog, forums, and documentation for announcements regarding deprecated features and visuals.

nope, tried them all. None of them are suitable.
The heatstreams visual is the only one that provides what I need. It's actually involved in the safeguarding space, and therefore critical to what we do. MS just removing it without an explanation is unacceptable and gives us another reason to move to tableau.

Yes, I have taken a copy fortuantly.
Unbelievably poor from Microsoft, unless they can show a product isn't in use or poses a security risk/application risk, they shouldn't be taking anything away. Not to mention crippling a porduct like Power Bi - less visuals make it less attractive as do more paid for visuals.
The GitHub Repo is available below, and is OpenSource. The project appears mature without recent contributions. An option would be to save a copy of the visual or a prior report as a template for your needs.
Issues
If you have found a true bug or issue, you can make a post to the forum to let others know (and that would be very nice of you to do so). But if you want to get it fixed, you should post it in the Issues/Ideas (it varies) area of the community. Specifically, you should post it here:
Power BI - https://community.powerbi.com/t5/Issues/idb-p/Issues
PowerAutomate - https://powerusers.microsoft.com/t5/I-Found-A-Bug/bd-p/BugFound
PowerApps - https://ideas.powerapps.com
Ideas
If you have a new idea for functionality or how something should work, you can certainly start a thread on the community to solicit feedback on your idea, but you should also post the idea in the ideas section of the website and solicit others to vote on your idea. The development teams use the Ideas area of the communities to build their development pipeline and a significant amount of weight is placed on Ideas that have lots of votes versus those that do not. The ideas areas of the communities are here:
Power BI - https://ideas.powerbi.com
PowerAutomate - https://powerusers.microsoft.com/t5/Flow-Ideas/idb-p/FlowIdeas
PowerApps - https://powerusers.microsoft.com/t5/PowerApps-Ideas/idb-p/PowerAppsIdeas
