Get Data from SQL Server Database unresponsive

Hi,

When I try to connect to an SQL Server database, on clicking OK, the Get Data form disappears after a few seconds and then the application becomes unresponsive. Checking task manager, Power BI is using plenty of CPU, but never displays anything from that point on (I even walked away a couple of hours).

I've tried various combinaations of populating 'Server', 'Database' and 'SQL Statement'. The odd thing is that SQL Server Management Studio connects to the DB fine.

I'm running Version: 2.31.4280.361 64-bit (January 2016).

Any help appreciated.

@chrisread By "unresponsive" you mean Windows prompt you that the application is not responding? Does it work for any other source (like simple Excel, CSV, etc)? Did data source this ever work in previous releases?

Hi @pqian, no, windows doesn't prompt. The get data form disappears (at which point I would have expected the form displaying the SQL server database tables to select) and I cannot interact with Power BI.

Looking at the process in Task Manager, Power BI coninues to use plenty of CPU, which suggests something is happening, but nothing ever does.

Getting data from other sources such as CSV works fine.

Thanks,

Chris

@chrisread this is weird...Can you record a video or take a screenshot of the application in this state?

Do you see Microsoft.Mashup.Container.exe in the process explorer and are they taking any CPU?

Have you tried clearing the cache (Settings->Global->Data Load) and also clearing the credentials to that data source?

Hi @pqian, tried clearing the cache and data source credentials. Sadly no luck.

The strange thing is that Management Studio connects fine, and this uses my Windows credentials. I've attached a screenshot of windows task manager. Mashup container is there but stays static and doesn't use any CPU. It's PBIDesktop.exe that's going mad on CPU and slowly incrementing on memory. But the application itself remains unresponsive with just the main window displayed (the Get data form having disappeared).

For info, this is on a virtual desktop with no internet access, just incase that makes any difference whatsoever.

I found a work around @pqian. I tested whether PowerPivot would connect to the SQL server database, which it did. While connected with PowerPivot I tried connecting with PowerBI, at which point it suddenly gave me the following message:

"The data source you're trying to access doesn't support encryption. To access this data source using an unencrypted connection, click OK"

It had never done this before. I clicked OK and hey presto, I got the database Navigator window with all the database tables!

It seems PowerPivot was doing something that then made PowerBI give me the encryption message.
