Forecasting in Analytics

In order to use the forecasting line, do you need more than one 'Seasonality' of data?  I have 1 year of data (monthly), and am forecasting out 12 months.  The forecast line for each month is exactly equal to the actual data.  I was thinking there would still have been some smoothing, but am fairly new.
