I understand how to fix column widths in a matrix, but is it possible to fix the width of the row headers as well? The row headers change size as I toggle through hierarchies.

Unfortunately this does not help. What I have tried so far is to navigate through each step of the heirarchy and at each level I adjust the row header width to the match the largest possible width. This seems to do the trick, but it would be nice to have a native formatting solution.

You can try deactivating the "Text Wrap" option for the row headers.
