There is a published power bi report, I need to find the source or location of the original power bi desktop report.

Just give one try to download the PBIX from power bi service and open that PBIX file and go to "Edit Queries" Option from Menu bar --> Select Data Source Setting --> Data Sources in Current file. (Screen shot is attached for your reference)

you can't.
As the dataset is named by the name of the pbix, you might search for the file "<dataset name>.pbix", but this may be futile.
If you have access to the workspace, and need a "new" instance of the pbix, you can save / export / download the report as pbix:
