Posting about two (very specific) feature requests for Power BI Matrix visuals:
1. Total Row at Top: In Tabular Format, you cannot place the Total Row at the top of the table for whatever reason... this is not ideal as when you have a table that exceeds the display boundaries you must scroll down to see the total row. I'm pretty sure you used to be able to have a tabular-type format with the total row at the top and it was changed
2. Per-Value-Column Sorting with Calculation Items: I'm sure this is more of a technical limitation, but I'm also sure there is a possible solution that could be built in. When displaying multiple calculation items in a Matrix visual, you cannot sort by any of the value columns, only by the base underlying table sum value column. This is not ideal and negates the purpose of calculation groups for many applications with matrix visuals
I'm almost certain that solutions to these issues do not exist but please comment if you are aware of a solution.

Regarding the second feature, "Per-Value-Column Sorting with Calculation Items"
I would like to suggest a workaround
I have a Matrix visual with the “Continent” column placed in the Rows well, the “Time Calc” column (in this scenario column is taken from a calculation group table, however same workaround can be used even when the column is taken from a normal table) placed in the Columns well, and “Sales Amount” placed in the Values well, as shown below.
I wanted to sort the Continents based on the QTD value in descending order.
By default, the Matrix visual does not support per-value sorting. In this scenario, you can follow the trick below to achieve this.
This hides the value of the sorting measure.
6. At the visual level, rename SortingMeasure, Sales Amount, and Continentto a blank space, and rename the Time Calc column to “Continent”.
That’s it! You are now able to perform per-value sorting in a Matrix visual.

Hi @bradbel
Total Row at Top - Totals can only appear at the bottom. So, workaround is we can create a measure card or table visual above the matrix to show totals.
Sorting by Calculation Items - Power BI cannot sort matrix columns created from calculation groups individually. Sorting only works based on underlying measure. Workaround is creating measures instead of calculation items, or using a column for the sorting.
Both are current limitations of Power BI Matrix visuals and there is no native solution yet and only workarounds.

Hi,
It would also be nice to add calculations (measures and visual calculations) in the rows well of the matrix visual. A use case being adding a Serial number column (via a visual calculation) to a mtrix visual.
A new Power BI DataViz World Championship is coming this June! Don't miss out on submitting your entry.
