Error message: don't have permissions to live connect to datasets in service or feature is disabled

Hi All,

I have tried to open an old report but it is saying this error message

AmyJessica02_0-1655294281736.png

We have permissions to the live datasets but it is still not opening. Does anyone know what the likely scenario is or a possible workaround to get it open?

Couple of things i've already looked at:

We have an updated version of desktop
The orginal report is from NOV 2020 so not very old
It is not in our service, just desktop ( my guess is the data set used in it used to be in the service and now gone?)

The orginal owner is not at the company to try open it but admin also cannot open it.

If dataset was not available anymore would that still stop it even opening in desktop?

Thanks for your help,

Amy

Hi @AmyJessica02

When you connect to a Power BI dataset in Live Connect mode, it doesn't bring data and model into the pbix file. It requires you logging in an account which has the build permisson of the dataset. If the dataset is removed, no one can access that dataset any longer from Power BI Desktop. Please check the details of Considerations and limitations section in this doc: Connect to datasets in the Power BI service from Power BI Desktop

In your scenario, I suggest that you check if the dataset exists in Power BI Service first. If it's still in a valid workspace, check if you have build permission of the dataset. An easy method is to click More options > Create report in the workspace. If you can create a report with the dataset in the service, you have the build permission.

Or open a new pbix file in Power BI Desktop and use Get data > Power BI datasets to check if you can find this dataset and connect to it. If you can connect to it, it also means you have the build permission.

Also, let your Power BI admin check the following setting in Admin portal > Tenant settings: https://docs.microsoft.com/power-bi/admin/service-admin-portal-export-sharing#allow-live-connections
