    EgksThe Old slicer will not get filtered based on visual selection but you can use new slicer visual instead.

Finally! The answer was there right in front of me - the new style slicer visual! I had tried every conceivable way of getting the old slicer to filter when I selected a bar on my visual. Seems like all the advice on the web relates to the old slicer visual. Many thanks Jai! Pity the new visual does not behave like the old one!
