Drag and Drop named column (Data) into visual or value field not working

Recently i've had a bug that will not let me drag a column from the right hand 'Fields Panel' and drop into the values box on the visualisations box. This happens even when trying to drag a standard column or calculated column into the visual.

The only way I am manageing to create my visuals at this moment is by draging this field (Column) into a clear part of the page so it creates a new visual with the data i've dropped in and then format it accordingly. But the most anoying thing is if i was then to remove this field and try and drop or check the same field into this visual it doesnt work. I will have to start over by droping the field into the an empty part of the page again.

I've also lost the abiltilty to choose between count, count distinct, sum etc when right clicking the field. I now have to make a new measure just to tell me the total count of a column.

The only thing I can think of that may have broken my report is that i've been using tabular editor 3 over the last couple of weeks.

I've been using power bi for several years and never come across this bug before.

- I have tried to unistall power bi and install the latest version again but no luck 😞

If anyone else has any ideas on how to get me power bi desktop working as it used to please let me know!

Many thanks, Craig.

Hi @TFTF_BI ,

Any updates?

Best Regards,
Eyelyn Qin

Good morning,

So after a couple of weeks trying to understand this issue i've found out the below:

The reason for the error was due to using Tabular Editor 3 along side my report. If you use folders to organise your measures using Tabular then you loose many functions that are usually available on Power BI desktop.

You also loose the automatic column formating and the automatic measure in the drop down as shown below.

So basicly using tabular editor after the lastest update has messed up my PB file. If i create a new file from scratch everything is back to how it should be unitll I open Tabular Editor.

After Tabular

There are other issues that this creates too. At this moment in time I am having these issues with a large report that will take time to start fresh. I currently have to create new measures just to count or sum a column. This will be fixed when I decide to replicate this report in a new file.

Hi @TFTF_BI I‘ve found a solution maybe it can help you. I‘ve had the same situation.  I want drag the column into the values box on the visualisations box, but it didn't work. I try to create a measure, which DAX is MIN('table_name'[column_name]). I can drag the new measure into the values box on the visualisations box.

Does such error occur in other reports as well? Do you try to re-start the PBI / your machine? Or create a new report?

Could you please share some screenshots/screenrecordings to help us clarify your scenario?

Eyelyn Qin
