Data update.

Hello

I have my computer the power BI file, which I have taken the data source from different databases. Sometimes of common company share points, and on other occasions of excel files that I have on my work computer.

I upload the Power BI file to my "Workspace".

When I try to update the data through the "Semantic Model" I get an error in which it tells me that there is an error in the dataset and that the update is disabled.

I don't know which way to use to solve this problem. From what I have been informed it seems that the problem would be because part of my data is on my computer. So there would be two possibilities:

1. Local Data Gateway. It is used to transfer data that is not in the cloud.

2. Switch the excel files to the company's cloud.

Which path should I follow? In case it is point 1 to update a gateway it tells me that the last gateway needs to be downloaded in standard mode. Before you do anything... Can you explain to me why this has to be done? The truth is that I don't understand it very well.

Let's see if you can give me a little light to know which way to go.

Thanks a lot.

Best regards.

Hello,
The issue you're encountering is common when working with Power BI files that source data from local files or on-premises systems. Let me clarify both paths you're considering:

1. Local Data Gateway:

  • What it does: The gateway acts as a bridge between your local data (Excel files, databases, etc.) and Power BI Service in the cloud. Without this gateway, Power BI cannot access data stored on your local machine or company servers when refreshing.
  • Why you need it: If some of your data is stored on your local computer or on-premises servers, the Power BI Service needs a way to access that data when refreshing. The gateway ensures a secure transfer of data between your local environment and Power BI Service.
  • Standard mode: This refers to the standard installation of the gateway, which supports both scheduled and on-demand refreshes for data stored locally. By installing the gateway, you're enabling Power BI to update your reports using data that is not in the cloud.

2. Switching Excel Files to the Cloud:

  • What this does: If you move your Excel files to the company's cloud (e.g., SharePoint or OneDrive for Business), Power BI will have direct access to them in the cloud. This eliminates the need for a data gateway since the data will be stored in a cloud environment.
  • When it's useful: If all your data sources can be moved to the cloud, this simplifies the setup and avoids having to manage a gateway.

Which Path to Choose?

  • If most of your data is on-premises or stored locally, the Local Data Gateway is the best option because it allows you to keep data local but still refresh it in Power BI.
  • If your data can easily be moved to the cloud, then moving your Excel files and other data sources to the company's cloud would be a simpler long-term solution. This way, you wouldn't need to manage a gateway.

How to Proceed with Gateway Installation:

If you decide to use the Local Data Gateway:

  1. Download the Power BI Gateway (Standard mode) from the Power BI website.
  2. Install it on the machine where the local data resides (your work computer).
  3. Configure the gateway in Power BI Service, connecting it to your datasets.
  4. Set up scheduled refreshes through the Power BI Service.

Clarified¡ Thank you very much! I get to it now that I have a clear path to follow. I get to the gateway.
