I keep getting this error message, even when I add the file from my own sharepoint site... any clues?
Solved! Go to Solution.
Hi @b-kopik ,
When you use SharePoint Folder, the first screen only shows metadata (file names, folder paths, dates). That’s expected. To load the actual file data:
Connect with SharePoint Folder using only the site root URL.In Power Query, filter the table by Folder Path and Name until only your file remains.Click the binary link in the Content column - this opens the real file (Excel, CSV, etc.).Pick the sheet/table (for Excel) or raw data (for CSV), then Close & Apply. This way, you’ll get the file contents instead of just the file path.
Thank you.
Got it, thanks!
Thank you - I changed the URL and uploaded it as a SharePoint folder but it only loaded the data path (instead of the actual raw data):
Am I missing something?

Hey @b-kopik ,
The possible causes I suspect: Incorrect Credentials, Expired Session or Token, Wrong Account, Permissions Issue, Authentication Method
The error message indicates an authentication issue. Please try the following steps:
1) Make sure you’re signed in with the correct organizational account that has access to the SharePoint file.
2) If you recently changed your password, sign out and sign back in.
3) Confirm that your account has the necessary permissions for the file.
4) When connecting in Power BI (or your tool), choose Organizational Account and complete any MFA (Multi-Factor Authentication) steps if required.
Best Regards,
Nasif Azam
Hi,
From your screenshot, it looks you used 'Web connector '. If this is the case, try Power BI built-in connector like 'SharePoint Folder' or 'SharePoint list' as they are more reliable.
If use the SharePoint Folder connector,
URL would be just the root site, like 'https://company.sharepoint.com/sites/TeamSite' and paste only the site root.
Authenticate with Organizational Account or your Microsoft 365 login, then Power BI will then let you navigate the library and pick your file.
