In the literature, 8 cores are recommended for a Data Gateway.
Am trying to figure out the best Azure VM series.
Part will just be testing (currently doing), but I wonder - when it says "8 cores", in Azure VM terms, does that = 8 vcores? Kinda pricey.
Hi @bbbm ,
Does that make sense? If so, kindly mark my answer as the solution to close the case please. Thanks in advance.

Thanks! You were talking about Power BI Premium capacities / linked them, but my question was just about gateway VMs, not premium capacities at all.
I still wasn't clear - "recommended 8 cores", equivalent to 8 virtual cores?
Hi @bbbm ,
An 8-core CPU is recommended to Gateway, and it is quite different from Power BI capacity. Install gateway on azure vm, just look at the v-core of vm instead of Power BI capacity.
Please learn more about Power BI capacity: Processing is achieved by a set number of v-cores, divided equally between backend and frontend.
More details: Capacity nodes
It can be difficult to accurately estimate the right size. We recommend that you start with a machine with at least 8 CPU cores, 8 GB of RAM, and multiple Gigabit network adapters. You can then measure a typical gateway workload by logging CPU and memory system counters. For more information, see Monitor and optimize on-premises data gateway performance.
If I have misunderstand your meaning, please provide more details.
