Current/Pipeline Resource planning visuals

Good evening, 

Bit of a general ideas request for this one really, we are trying to move our current resource plan into PowerBI and being able to blend this with our forecast/future pipeline plan. I am finding this quite difficult. 

 

Just wondering if anyone has any general tips or visual ideas (custom or ones available) where you've been able to make a resource plan in terms of FTEs and their roll off projects onto pipeline projects work well in PowerBI as I'm finding this pretty difficult to work well just with the changeable nature of resource planning and the reality of it being a lot more nuanced than it seems at first thought 🤔 

 

Any ideas/thoughts gratefully received, sorry bit of a vague one, trying this using Microsoft Lists as the source at the moment!

    Resource planning in Power BI, especially when considering current resources and future pipeline projects, can be challenging due to the dynamic nature of the data. You need to use a Gantt chart to show the start and end dates of the projects and the FTEs assigned to each project. This helps understand how resources are allocated over time.
    Use a stacked bar or column chart to represent the allocation of FTEs across different projects. Each section of the stack can represent a different project, and the total height represents the total number of FTEs available.
    A waterfall chart can effectively show the flow of resources between projects. You can visually see the number of FTEs that roll off from one project and are assigned to another.
    Use a line chart to show the trend of FTE demand over time, combining current allocations with forecasted future demand. This helps identify potential resource shortages or surpluses.
    Use slicers to allow users to filter data by project phase (e.g., planning, execution, closeout) or time period, helping them focus on specific aspects of resource planning.
    Use heat maps to analyze resource utilization across projects and time periods. This helps identify overworked or underutilized teams.
    To achieve the above, you need to ensure that the data in Microsoft Lists is well structured, with clear relationships between projects, resources, and timelines. You might need to preprocess your data to create the necessary relationships or aggregations in Power BI.

  • Power BI is a reporting tool. It is not designed for resource planning.  It has no memory. Find a different tool that is designed for your task.
