    As you rightly mentioned we cannot place a date column into Y axis of a line chart in power bi.

    I would like to suggest a workaround, create a duplicate of date column in power query

    And then change the data type of this duplicate column to decimal in power bi and then the result would look like this 

    Then you will be able to plot the line chart using this duplicated column in Y axis. 

    TO avoid confusion, may be hide y axis title and lables completely and replace the default tooltip with cusotm tooltip page.

     

    If you want you can use measure driven dat labels and it looks like this
