Correct Data Modeling | What are the best practices?

Hi folks,

For 6 months or so, I've been creating Power BI Reports from CSV files. I would have my fact Table, and I would usually create a star schema by duplicating my fact table, removing other columns from the duplicate (exception the dimension I'm creating), then adding an index, then merging the DimKey to my fact table, and linking my dimension table to the fact table using the Index KEY.

I repeat this step for every dimension within my Fact Table. Is this correct or am I completely off here? Again, this is all from flat CSV files. Not sure if this is the correct way to go about doing this.. If there is a better way, please do let me know.

PS: Soon, I will have my first instance where a client will allow me access to a SQL view. I am planning to do the same thing with the flat table that I will have access to.

Is this correct? Please let me know if I should be creating star schemas in a different way.

Thank you!

What you are doing is a good practice.  See this Guy In A Cube video for confirmation.
